Michoel Burger

Engineering leader and counselor in training. I build healthcare technology and I'm learning to sit with people in the hard moments too.

The short version

I've been building software for over fifteen years, mostly in healthcare. I was a founding engineer at Hospital IQ, managed engineering teams at Regard, and now lead engineering at Neuroflow, a behavioral health platform. A lot of that work has been EHR integrations, data infrastructure, and figuring out how to get useful clinical tools into the hands of people who actually need them.

Somewhere along the way I noticed that the parts of my job I cared about most weren't really about code. They were about sitting across from someone on my team who was going through something hard and being useful in that conversation. I kept gravitating toward the people stuff — mentoring, hiring, helping folks navigate rough patches — and eventually I figured I should get proper training.

So now I'm also getting my MS in Mental Health Counseling at NYU Steinhardt. I don't plan to pick one career over the other. I like building things and I like talking to people, and I'm lucky that both of those can be the job.

Helped bring tech education to rural Kenya through course development and one-on-one mentoring.

The people side of engineering management

In every management role, the part I've cared most about is the people. Helping engineers figure out what they want to do next, being there when things get hard outside of work, and trying to build teams where people can actually be honest with each other.

Improv

I signed up for a UCB improv class on a whim in 2014 and it kind of took over. I've trained at the Magnet Theater, PIT, and iO Chicago, and performed on stages from New York to Hanoi to Bangalore to Nottingham and around Scandinavia.

Improv has a lot in common with counseling, it turns out — you have to actually listen, let go of your own agenda, and work with whatever shows up. I also teach workshops and will happily nerd out about scene work over coffee.

Travel

I've lived and worked from a lot of places. The map below shows some of where I've been.
